From Scott Fitzgerald's
Ledger

Fitzgerald's Ledger includes a year-by-year accounting of his earnings from 1919—his first year as a professional writer—through 1936. He stopped maintaining this record when he went to work for the movies in 1937.

This accounting is indispensable for understanding the shape of Fitzgerald's career as a professional writer—that is, the relationship between his magazine work and his novels. The record shows that his magazine stories brought most of his income. Moreover, by today's standards for a successful writer, he did not earn a great deal of money. Fitzgerald's earnings for 1919-36 were $386,382.96 after commissions—a total that includes movie work and all ancillary rights—for an average of $21,466 per year. During this period sales and serializations of his nine books brought $74,515. This Side of Paradise earned $14,375 plus $10,000 for movie rights; The Beautiful and Damned, $22,297 plus $2,250 for movie rights; The Great Gatsby, $8,397 plus $6,864 from the play and $18,910 for movie rights; Tender Is the Night, $16,307. The figure for Tender Is the Night is uncertain because it is impossible to untangle the loans and advances against this novel. His first three volumes of stories brought a total of $11,270.

Fitzgerald's books did not enjoy steady backlist sales. In 1929, the year The Saturday Evening Post raised his story price to $4,000, his total royalties on seven books were $31.77.

Editorial note: These figures are after agent's commissions were deducted. Bracketed material has been supplied. Fitzgerald's arithmetic has not been corrected.
